Humanity tends to often underestimate human sinfulness and God's holiness when evaluating concepts of hell.
Yes, people tend to compare themselves to the worst criminals in history, rather than comparing themselves to God's holiness. And indeed, most people don't even understand God's holiness, nor do they even really grasp the concept, I don't think, of what pure holiness is.
