Interesting verses from the Qur'an and the Hadith

After Muhammad died, various conflicting Qur’ans were produced. It was the Caliph Uthman who made his own version of the Qur’an the official one (see Bukhari’s Hadith, Vol. 1, pg. 56, No. 63). He later burned all the other conflicting Qur’ans. The Qur’an sold today is the Uthman version.

The Hadith is the record of the teachings and examples of Muhammad not found in the Qur’an and are thus authoritative for all Muslims. To deny the Hadith is to be guilty of apostasy under Islamic Law. The greatest of all Hadith scholars was Bukhari.

Surah 2:190-194: Fight in the cause of Allah against those who fight you … and kill them wherever you catch them … if they fight you, kill them. Such is the reward of those who suppress the Faith…. And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah.

Surah 2:216: Fighting is prescribed for you.

Surah 2:244: Fight in the cause of Allah.

Surah 4:74: Let those who fight in the cause of Allah, who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter, to him who fighteth in the cause of Allah…. Soon shall We give him a reward of great value.

Surah 4:89: If they turn apostates, seize them and kill them wherever you find them.

Surah 4:91: Seize them and kill them wherever you get them.

Surah 5:33: The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and his apostle … they shall be slaughtered, or crucified, or their hands and feet shall be struck off alternately, or they shall be banished from the land.

Surah 5:51: O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends.

On Jesus:
Surah 5:72-73: They do blaspheme who say: Allah is Christ the son of Mary…. They do blaspheme who say: Allah is one of three (gods) … Christ the son of Mary was no more than an apostle.

Ask No Questions:
Surah 5:101: Ask not questions about things which, if made plain to you may cause you trouble…. Some people before you did ask such questions, and on account lost their faith (in Islam).

The Greatest Deceiver:
Surah 3:54: The greatest Deceiver (Makara) of them all is Allah.

Beating Wives:
Surah 4:34: Men are the managers of the affairs of women … those you fear may be rebellious admonish; banish them to their couches, and beat them.

People Turning Into Monkeys, Rats and Pigs:
From the Hadith:
Bukhari, Vol. IV, No. 524, pg. 333: The Prophet said, “A group of Israelites were lost. Nobody knows what they did. But I do not see them except that they were cursed and transformed into rats, for if you put the milk of a she-camel in front of a rat, it will not drink it, but if the milk of a sheep is put in front of it, it will drink it.

(1) It was illegal for the Israelites to eat the meat or drink the milk of camels, while they were allowed to eat the meat and drink the milk of sheep. The prophet inferred from the rat’s habit that some of the Israelites had been transformed into rats.

(2) Later on the prophet was informed through Inspiration about the fate of those Israelites: They were transformed into pigs and monkeys.

Mohammed’s Inspiration
According to the Hadith:

Mohammed would hear ringing in his ears; his heart would beat rapidly; his face turn red; his breathing would become labored; he would fall to the ground or lie down; he would shake; his eyes would open wide; his lips tremble; spit drool from the corners of his mouth; he would sweat profusely; he saw and heard things no one else ever saw or heard; he would sometimes make a snoring noise like that of a camel; and he would be covered with a sheet.

2. What will be the first meal taken by the people of Paradise?
3. Why does a child resemble its father and why does it resemble its maternal uncle?”
Allah’s Apostle said, “Gabriel just now told me of their answers.”
Abdullah said, “He (i.e. Gabriel), from amongst all the angels, is the enemy of the Jews.”
Allah’s Apostle said, “The first sign of the Hour will be a fire that will bring together the people from the East to the West; the first meal of the people of Paradise will be extralobe of fish-liver. As for the resemblance of the child to its parents: If a man has sexual intercourse with his wife and gets his discharge first, the child will resemble the father, and if the woman gets her discharge first, the child will resemble her.”

The he raised him up and said, “How long have you stayed here?” He said, “A day or a part of a day.” He said, “No, you have been here for 100 years! But look at your food and your drink, they show no signs of age. And look at your donkey! We have made you a sign unto the people. Look further at the bones (of your body) how We clothed them with flesh.”

satire and theology,

Thanks, Russ.

To Muslims, the Qur'an is the word of God 'vowel for vowel, syllable for syllable' (Abul A'ala Mawdudi, The Message of the Prophet's Seerat, p. 14), revealed in Arabic to Muhammad through the angel Gabriel at intervals over a period of some twenty years. It is considered to be uncreated and eternally existent on lauh mahfuz, a guarded tablet in heaven (Surah 85:22). Though the Qur'an was sent to Muhammad at specific times, it was always there with God. As God is, the Qur'an is.

However, the fact that various conflicting Qur’ans were produced show another story altogether, not to mention Muhammad's episodes of being demon-possessed, plus the fact that the Qur'an teaches things like killing Jews and Christians, etc., and show that Allah must be an evil god.

The Quran and the Hadith are companions. Interesting. That is one more feather in the fiction cap for the Quran.

Symbolism in looking up or down would indicate something spiritual, wouldn't it?

So, if a Muslim is looking down, what is he praying to?

Yes.

I think we both know the answer to that. Here's another clue:

Mohammed’s Inspiration:
From the Hadiths:

Mohammed would hear ringing in his ears; his heart would beat rapidly; his face turn red; his breathing would become labored; he would fall to the ground or lie down; he would shake; his eyes would open wide; his lips tremble; spit drool from the corners of his mouth; he would sweat profusely; he saw and heard things no one else ever saw or heard; he would sometimes make a snoring noise like that of a camel; and he would be covered with a sheet.

"Ayesha [Muhammad's favorite wife] reported "I saw him [Muhammad] while the revelation descended upon him on an intensely cold day; then it left him while his brow steamed with sweat" (Miskat IV).

This is an interesting story since it supports that Muhammad temporarily lost control of himself to a spiritual being. Notice that Ayesha reports, it left him. It is important to ask, "What was "it"?

In another story reported in the Hadith called Sahih Muslim, Book 26, Number 5395, Muhammad is reported to have gone into a trance-like state. Just before this phenomenon occurred, Muhammad was eating his evening meal and had been asked a question by another wife named Sauda. Then the event occurred. As the trance-like state took control over Muhammad, his thoughts and actions appeared to be frozen in time. No gestures or speech proceeded from Muhammad as long as he remained under spiritual captivation. Suddenly the phenomenon ended and Muhammad reentered the conversation with Sauda as if from the instant that he had earlier left that conversation. The Story about this event reads as follows:

Narrated Ayesha [Muhammad's favorite wife]:

. . . Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) was at that time in my house having his evening meal and there was a bone in his hand. Sauda [Another wife of Muhammad] reclined and said: Allah's Messenger. I went out and 'Umar said to me so and so [Asking Muhammad for permission]. She (Ayesha) reported: There came the revelation to him and then it was over; the bone was then in his hand and he had not thrown it and he said:" Permission has been granted to you that you may go out . . ."

Another interesting story that parallels the first story. There is a sequence to the possession as follows:

1. Muhammad has control of himself before the possession event occurs.
2. Muhammad loses control of himself as a spirit takes control of him. In each story, Muhammad is not able to speak to the people around him, he stops eating, or in general is not capable of response during this time of spiritual captivation.
3. When the spirit leaves, Muhammad gains control of himself and continues right where he left off.

Let's compare this with the Bible.

Here are some of the biblical passages: Matthew 9:32-33; 12:22; 17:18; Mark 5:1-20; 7:26-30; Luke 4:33-36; Luke 22:3; Acts 16:16-18. In some of these passages, the demon possession causes physical ailments such as inability to speak, epileptic symptoms, blindness, etc.

Yes, just like the fact that Jehovah's Witnesses, for example, will never tell you about their multiple past failed prophecies. Nor will Mormons tell you they actually believe in countless gods.

What is the Koran?

Yemeni fragments of the Qur'an were found in 1972 during the restoration of the Great Mosque of Sana'a, in Yemen. Some of the parchment pages date back to the seventh and eighth centuries A.D., or Islam's first two centuries, and are perhaps the oldest Qurans in existence. Some of these fragments revealed small but intriguing aberrations from the standard Quranic text. Such aberrations, though not surprising to textual historians, are at odds with the orthodox Muslim belief that the Qur'an as it has reached us today is the perfect, timeless, and unchanging Word of God.

Jeff,
that description you were giving of Muhammed's catatonia sounds a lot like epilepsy.

Of course, they knew nothing about epilepsy, then. So, why did people believe he was a prophet and not the devil?

Jeff said...

Jim,

Catatonia is a syndrome of psychological and motorological disturbances. Patients with catatonia may experience an extreme loss of motor skills or even constant hyperactive motor activity. Catatonic patients will sometimes hold rigid poses for hours and will ignore any external stimuli.

Epilepsy symptoms include seizures, muscle spasms and jerks, rigid body shaking, writhing, foaming at the mouth, black-outs, periods of missing memory, and possible sounds like grunting.

Scripture gives some examples of people being possessed by demons. From these descriptions, we can find some symptoms of demonic influence as well as gain insights as to how a demon possesses someone. In some of these passages, the demon possession causes physical ailments (inability to speak, epileptic symptoms, blindness, etc. [Matthew 9:32-33, Mark 9:17-18]); in other cases the demon causes the individual to do evil (Judas is the main example).

Generally speaking, there are some similarities between epilepsy, catatonia and demon possession. In the Bible, demons sometimes caused certain things to happen to people which resembled these medical conditions. But, contrary to what some people think today, they are not the same. When the demons were cast out by Jesus, the symptoms ceased. If the symptoms were caused by an underlying medical condition, then the symptoms would have continued, and Jesus would have been regarded as a fake. If the relevant conditions of the people Jesus healed were not demonic, but were either mental illness or epilepsy, then the people would not have responded to Jesus' 'treatment.' They would have continued to be 'sick' with whatever they had. Casting out a non-existent demon would not have helped them. So, demon possession and epilepsy are two different things, though some of the same symptoms are apparently shared by both.

According to Al Waqidi, Muhammad would break everything brought into the house with a shape of the cross on it. Additionally, Ahmad ibn Hanbal (A.D. 855) said that Muhammad would foam at the mouth during prayer. Christians should immediately remember the Apostle Mark's telling of Jesus casting a demon out of a boy who was possessed. This demon-possessed boy also showed this same symptom of "foaming at the mouth".

We know from Islamic historians that Muhammad's many wives did believe he was a a prophet of Allah, in part, because Muhammad would frequently go into epileptic frenzies and foam at the mouth, while receiving his "revelations". Also, unlike any of the true prophets of Israel, Muhammad would go through prolonged periods of time when he himself thought he was going mad, or that he was possessed by demons. In sharp contrast, the Hebrew prophets never acted like this. The Hebrew prophets were certain that God (Yahweh) was speaking to them.

Muhammad claimed the angel Gabriel transmitted the entire Koran to him from Allah while he was living in the Hira Cave. At first, Muhammad feared he had been overtaken by a "Jinn", a troubling spirit. It was Muhammad's wife that convinced Muhammad that what he received in the cave was from God. Muhammad's wife Khadijah encouraged him that his visions were indeed from God, and that he had been chosen as his special messenger. Amr ibn Sharhabil says Muhammad mentioned to his wife Khadijah that he feared he was possessed by demons and wondered whether others might consider him possessed by jinn (Pfander 1910:345). He says Muhammad said; “When I went into seclusion I heard a voice. By Allah I feared that something wrong was going to happen.” Also revealing is the report by Al Waqidi that Muhammad had such an aversion to the form of the cross that he would break everything brought into the house with a shape of the cross on it (Nehls 1990:61).

Muhammad himself was convinced that the "revelations" he received in the Hira Cave were evil and from a demon (Jinn). Muhammad's constant fits, foaming at the mouth and other manifestations certainly fit in with that idea. This is how demon possessed people are known to behave today, as they did in both the times of Jesus and Muhammad. The Hebrew prophets and Jesus Christ never behaved like this. But all over the world, where demons are listened to, you will find this kind of behavior.

What can be rationally thought of the nearly weekly suicide bombings by Muslims, and the very real Muslim psychosis of thinking they will kill every Jew, and then every Christian and Hindu and every other non-believer, who doesn't convert to Islam?
