The Gospel in the Old Testament

All are sinners

“The LORD looks down from heaven on the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God.” (Psalm 14:2)

“The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)

“Then I said, "Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts." (Isaiah 6:5)

Sin separates us from God

“But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.” (Isaiah 59:2)

“When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face.” (Exodus 34:33)

"Many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting contempt.” (Daniel 12:2)

Our good deeds are not good enough

“For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment [literally, a woman’s menstruating rags]; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.” (Isaiah 64:6)

God gave a blood atonement

“For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life.” (Leviticus 17:11)

“Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it.” (Exodus 12:7)

“The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 12:13)

God promised a Messiah to bear our sins

The Exalted Servant
“Behold, My servant will prosper,
He will be high and lifted up and greatly exalted.
Just as many were astonished at you, My people,
So His appearance was marred more than any man
And His form more than the sons of men.
Thus He will sprinkle many nations,
Kings will shut their mouths on account of Him;
For what had not been told them they will see,
And what they had not heard they will understand.

The Suffering Servant
Who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot,
And like a root out of parched ground;
He has no stately form or majesty
That we should look upon Him,
Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.
He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted.
But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.
All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all
To fall on Him.
He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He did not open His mouth;
Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
So He did not open His mouth.
By oppression and judgment He was taken away;
And as for His generation, who considered
That He was cut off out of the land of the living
For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?
His grave was assigned with wicked men,
Yet He was with a rich man in His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
But the LORD was pleased
To crush Him, putting Him to grief;
If He would render Himself as a guilt offering,
He will see His offspring,
He will prolong His days,
And the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.
As a result of the anguish of His soul,
He will see it and be satisfied;
By His knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will justify the many,
As He will bear their iniquities.
Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great,
And He will divide the booty with the strong;
Because He poured out Himself to death,
And was numbered with the transgressors;
Yet He Himself bore the sin of many,
And interceded for the transgressors.”
(Isaiah 52:13-53:12)

How do we know Jesus is the Promised One?

"But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Too little to be among the clans of Judah,
From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel
His goings forth are from long ago,
From the days of eternity."
(Micah 5:2)

"Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined.” (Daniel 9:26)

"I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.” (Zechariah 12:10)

“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? O my God, I cry in the day time, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent. But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded. But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts. I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly. Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me. Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel. For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard. My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him. The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever. All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. For the kingdom is the LORD's: and he is the governor among the nations. All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul. A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.” (Psalm 22)

Helpful and useful verse.

Jeff, I left a previous comment, but perhaps you are too busy for this presently, which is cool.

I hope things are progressing.

Russ,

I have not been receiving e-mail notifications ever since I switched to IncrediMail. Sorry about that. I have also not been receiving Facebook notifications. I don't know whether they are related.

BTW, yesterday I was awakened by voices just outside my bedroom window (the window at the head of my bed), sounding like they were 2-3 feet away, in my back yard, saying, "Get on the ground now, or you're finished! You hear me?! Get ON THE GROUND NOW, or you're FINISHED!" They were arresting someone in my back yard. There were sirens sounding all over and at least 3 Sheriff's Dept. cars: one in my yard, one at the end of the block, another one on the other street. There was a Crime Scene Investigation van and other cars, and helicopters were flying around. Today I called and talked to a deputy on the phone about the arrest, to find out if it was related to whoever tried to kick in my front door a few weeks ago. A group of four men were arrested yesterday who had been breaking into homes in this area, but they don't know if the person who tried to kick in my front door was one of the same guys. (They were arrested around noon, but the attempt to kick in my front door a few weeks ago was at 11:30 PM. Because of the time difference, the deputy thought it might not be related.) A woman saw them carrying a TV out of a house and called the police. The Sheriff's Dept. is also investigating all incidents in this area in the past month or two, to try to find out who did what.

The story even made the news:

Two things,

One, with your music clip in this article you can change the width setting number in your article html code (decrease) in order that it fits within your post's parameters.

Two, I did the same with a music clip in my s&t latest.

God bless!

They also had police dogs yesterday when they made the arrests. The men tried to flee, and I'm guessing the guy captured in my yard had been trying to flee as well. The house they were stealing from was apparently the one across the street from me.

Okay, your video fits properly within IE 8 and Safari, but not Firefox, at least with my versions.

That has been a frequent video problem for me with Firefox. I suppose for most of your readers it will look fine as most use IE, but I use three different browsers and so I notice.

Jeff, I am glad the police caught these guys and hope your area is safe in the future.

Ah, I didn't even notice that it was overlapping the list on the right! Thanks, Russ! I've made it half the size, which may be slightly too small, but oh, well, its probably fine like that.

Yeah, I'll have to check your blog site(s). I have not been receiving your e-mails, but I just now found out why. It has been dumping them and my Facebook notifications into the Junk Mail folder. I have now approved them, so I should be getting them from now on.

Interesting, and good to know that info. Thanks, Russ.

Cool. I have all 3 browsers, but I only use Firefox.
